Tundra. Cold. Snowy. These words would typically describe the beautiful State I get to call my home, but Minnesota is so much more. I have found through my travels that no place is like Minnesota. Although the above words do describe a good four months out of the year. They leave out the beauty of what they bring, like majestic frozen waterfalls, breathtaking trails while skiing, maybe even a dog sled ride along the North Shore.

The main issue I have with the words, Tundra, Cold and Snowy is that it only talks about those four months, it leaves out the other three wonderful seasons in Minnesota.

As a travel photographer I have had the privilege of experiencing many “seasons” in multiple different states across the country, but I have yet been able to find a state that can capture all four seasons through the lenses of my camera like MN. Along with pictures it brings experiences and moments that leave a mental image in your mind that you can keep forever.

Minnesota summers in my opinion offer the best experiences. The thought of going “Up North” to a cabin, chilling on the lake, tubing, going to Zorbaz for pizza and having a bonfire excites me.

… at “the great Minnesota get together” but “Minnesota” is found in the Duluth’s, Cross Lake’s, Pequot Lake’s, Ely’s, Grand Marais’s, etc. It is found in the “Up North” regions of this great state. Places where the people showcase the traditional “Minnesota Nice” attitudes and you may even hear a “uff-da” on occasion. It’s the place where we make hot dish and played duck duck gray duck as a kid.

Another great reason to visit the great “Up North” is the local/ Minnesota run companies like Duluth Coffee Company, Love Creamery, Zorbaz, Crafts and Cones, Duluth Trading Company to name some of my personal favorites. The locally run businesses bring their communities together.

To conclude, Minnesota is not that Cold, Tundra, Snowy place in the Midwest, but it’s the state of beautiful four seasons, picturesque landscapes, great businesses and some amazing people.

With the new Explore Minnesota campaign of “Find Your True North” it is time you come find yours in the “Up North” of Minnesota.
