19 You + Me by Dan + Shay

I couldn’t say it better than Dan and Shay did in their song “19 You + Me”. South Carolina is the place to be in the summer. Between the southern charm, the ocean, sweet tea and BBQ you won’t get any better than South Carolina.

This summer will be my fourth time going back to this wonderful state, specially Myrtle Beach, SC. Born and raised in Minnesota, I hadn’t gone to many southern states besides the typical Florida trip that everyone does until my freshmen year of college. Some friends and I decided to take a road trip to Myrtle Beach for Spring Break. I was a bit skeptical because it wasn’t going to be that warm in S. Carolina as it would be in Florida or California, but I decided to go, and I am glad I did. I saw a whole different side of the U.S. that I had never experienced….

Myrtle Beach… in the summers, this is the place to be. The beaches are full, the sun is hot, and the sweet tea is endless. The aesthetic of Myrtle Beach is something out of a movie. The southern charm, surfing and architecture is something right out of a Nicholas Sparks movie.

The beaches bring in many surfers and body boarders, which flood the waters with some cool shows and competitions.

Although many people think Myrtle Beach is a tourist trap, and don’t get me wrong, North Myrtle Beach is very much set up for tourists, but the history and charm of the south still shines. Another thing I love about Myrtle Beach is the architecture. The houses are lifted due to water levels rising and hurricanes. Another unique aspect is the coloring, they all have bright beautiful colors that make the beaches look like rainbows.

Charleston… although Myrtle Beach is a large tourist attraction. Charleston remains my favorite. It is not the beaches, surfing, and colorful side of South Carolina, but it is the history and architecture and charm that make Charleston one of my favorite places in the U.S.A.

Charleston was one of the first ports in America to buy and sell slaves from Africa. Although this should make this town a historical landmark, but not a tourist destination. I think the opposite. Charleston has made old slave markets into farmers markets where people of any races can come sell goods to tourists and locals. There is also historical horse drawn carriage rides through Charleston that discuss the history and how they changed. Because of their strong history and large ports, they had a French colony which is still in tack and creates a wonderful tourist attraction.

This is also a great place for photography. The largest photographed place is rainbow row, which is a row of townhome styled houses that each have a different color to make a beautiful rainbow effect across multiple blocks. It is hard to find it not very busy, but if you can grab a photo and share it on your Instagram.

Overall Charleston is the place to be for food, coffee, sweet tea, shopping, history, and architecture. This town will not disappoint and with only a couple hour drive, it makes for a great day trip from Myrtle Beach. This is something not only for broke college students, but for families and friends. And trust me you will want to come back each year, just to get another glass of sweet tea.
